Should Marathon events be more open to disabled athletes and if so, how should they achieve this?
Unfortunately, this often creates a catch 22 problem. Since the events are not advertises as being accessible, disabled athletes are not encouraged to enter. This gives the impression that there is no interest. Even after creating an event, disabled entry numbers might be very low, simply because disabled athletes do not know that the event has opened up entries. The event really needs to go through a very public process of creating accessibility. That way, all entrants are involved and know what’s happening. It also helps to advertise the event to disabled participants, encouraging them to enter.
